Youth baseball gloves continued...3rd base and outfield gloves
When considering youth baseball gloves it is important to the primary position that the glove will be used for. If the glove is going to be used primarily at positions other than the middle infield then it is recommended to have a slightly larger glove. Of course this is relative to the size of the player's hand.
The reason why 3rd base-men and outfielders use larger gloves is to get to as many balls as possible. The middle infielders are more concerned with getting the ball out quickly and they use a smaller glove. At 3rd base the fielder generally has more time to get rid of the ball because it has gotten to him much quicker at 3rd than at short stop or second base. There fore 3rd basemen want a larger glove to knock down or field as much as possible. Outfielders also prefer a larger glove to middle infielders. They have the most ground to cover so a larger glove is more important than getting the ball out quickly. Players can still get the ball out of larger gloves quickly both at 3rd base and the outfield.
Rule of thumb:The larger the glove the more the fielder can get to...the smaller the glove the quicker the player can get the ball out of the glove. In using this rule of thumb when choosing a glove you will be able to choose the best glove for your usages. Here are two examples of high quality gloves (around $85) for third basemen and outfielders.
