The balance of a bat is what makes bat buying somewhat difficult over the Internet. However "feeling" the bat at a store or trying out a teammates bat will give you enough information to buy the right bat.

Easton bats are typically more top end loaded while Louisville Slugger and Worth Bats tend not to be top end loaded.

When a bat is balanced with the weight more towards the barrel the player is theoretically able to generate more "whip action" in the swing. This happens due to the weight being farther from the hands (fulcrum).

One down side to a barrel loaded bat is when a player drops the head of the bat too early in the swing causing an upper cut or a loop in the swing.

In this scenario the weight goes from momentum a positive force in the swing to resistance a negative force in the swing.

Top loaded bats are great for generating maximum bat speed at contact. Just make sure that the weight of the bat is manageable for the player to maintain great technique.

You can't go wrong in choosing an evenly balanced bat because the player is able to generate great bad speed without as much risk in dropping the head of the bat too soon.

One last point about the balance of a bat. Remember from science class F=MA? Force equals mass times acceleration. In our purposes the force can be interchanged with power.

If I want a more powerful swing I can get it from increasing the mass or increasing the acceleration.

A top loaded bat acts in a way that the mass is increased. While the more evenly balanced bats use acceleration to generate power.

By looking at the bat buying decision scientifically you can see how both types of bats do extremely well.
