Information on baseball equipment continued...How to build a batting cage
Information on baseball equipment and how to build a batting cage is very important to consider before tackling this rather large chore.
Two of my greatest mistakes in building a batting cage were choosing the wrong netting for the application and setting the posts too soon. Another serious and potentially very dangerous mistake people make is to dig before they find out where underground utilities are located. And probably, the most costly mistake you could make is to have the batting cage installed with netting, L-screens, a pitching machine, lights, "the whole nine yards" and then get a letter from your home owners association explaining that you are in violation of neighborhood covenants and restrictions.
Choosing the right nettingHere is an information table from Burbank Sports Nets the best net builders in the business! 100% Twisted Knotted and Braided Nylon Netting BATTING CAGES and FIELD SCREENSWe have found 100% nylon twine is the best material for field screens and batting cages. Its strength and durability combined with our UV treatment makes for many years of use. #24 twisted knotted nylon twine is also used in many of our baseball backstop applications. Polyethylene Webbing Polyethylene is the most economical material on the market. Though not as durable as nylon, it is light-weight and easy to hang. It is ideal for youth leagues and backyard applications.

Construction processCheck with HOA, city and county ordinances to make sure you can erect a cage. Call before you dig to have all underground utilities marked. Prepare the flooring. Materials that can be used include a crushed gravel M-10 or a poured concrete pad with turf on top. If you choose to keep it grass that works fine (if it drains well). Lay out the cage using stakes before you dig the holes. Make sure that the cage is square. Also consider where the sun is going to be when using the cage. Allow plenty of drying time for the concrete footers to set up. Install frames according to manufacturer's specifications. Make sure that you read all of the instructions and information on baseball equipment that is included with the batting cage, L-screen and other equipment before installing and using. (This is one that I constantly have to remind myself to do!) Work with an assistant in hanging the net to the frames. This is very dangerous with just one person.
